# Get File

> Read a file's name, type, size and creation time.

> **Preview.** This endpoint is available to organisations in the Wordsmith MCP and files pilot. Other organisations receive `403 mcp_not_enabled`. See the [preview overview](/preview).

Returns a file's metadata. To read its contents, use [Get File Text](/api-reference/files/get-file-text) or [Get File Download](/api-reference/files/get-file-download).

You can read any file you have access to in Wordsmith, not only files you added through the API. A file that does not exist and a file you cannot read both return `404`, so the response never reveals whether an id exists.

## Authentication

Send an API key, or an OAuth access token with the `files:read` scope, as a bearer token in the `Authorization` header. `files:write` does not include `files:read`. A token without the scope gets `403` with `"error": "insufficient_scope"`.

## Path parameters

**file\_id** `string (uuid)` *required*

The file's id, as the files endpoints and task `input_files` and `output_files` return it.

## Response

**id** `string (uuid)`

The file's id.

**file\_name** `string | null`

The file's name.

**content\_type** `string | null`

The file's MIME type.

**content\_length** `integer | null`

Size in bytes.

**created\_at** `string | null`

When the file was created. ISO 8601 UTC.

| 401 | `unauthorized` | The API key is missing or invalid. |
| 403 | `mcp_not_enabled` | Your organisation is not in the preview. |
| 404 | `resource_not_found` | The file does not exist, or you cannot read it. |
