Before you start
Your role must allow it. Admins and full users can connect apps by default. Viewers cannot. An admin can allow it in a custom role with the Connect AI apps over MCP permission, under Settings → Roles. The MCP server URL ishttps://mcp.wordsmith.ai/mcp.
The app acts as you. It can only reach what you can reach in Wordsmith, and only within what you approve. New files it creates go to your private space.
ChatGPT
Custom apps with write access need a ChatGPT Business, Enterprise or Edu workspace. OpenAI’s guide, Developer mode and full MCP connectors in ChatGPT, has the current menu names.1
Turn on developer mode for the workspace
A ChatGPT workspace admin or owner turns on developer mode in the workspace settings, under Permissions & roles. Enterprise and Edu admins can give it to selected roles only.
2
Create the Wordsmith app
In ChatGPT, open Settings → Apps, turn on Developer mode under Advanced settings, and create an app. Name it Wordsmith, paste the MCP server URL, and choose OAuth as the authentication.
3
Sign in and approve
ChatGPT opens the Wordsmith sign-in page. Sign in with your Wordsmith account, check the consent screen, and click Authorize.
4
Share it with the workspace
Optional. A workspace admin can publish the tested app to the workspace. Members then add Wordsmith from the workspace’s apps without developer mode, and each member signs in with their own Wordsmith account.
Attach files from ChatGPT
Attach a file to your ChatGPT message and ask ChatGPT to use it with Wordsmith, for example “review this NDA with our Wordsmith playbook”. ChatGPT hands the attachment to Wordsmith, which saves a copy in your private space. Up to 10 files can go with one question to a Wordsmith agent. Files Wordsmith produces, such as a redline, a translation or a draft, stay in Wordsmith. ChatGPT gets a download link only when you ask for the file, and the link expires after 5 minutes. The ChatGPT app directory
Wordsmith is not yet listed in ChatGPT’s app directory. Once it is, you can add it from the directory without developer mode, and this page will link to the listing.
Claude
Custom connectors work in Claude on the web, Claude Desktop and Cowork, on every Claude plan. On the Free plan you can add one custom connector. Anthropic’s guide, Getting started with custom connectors using remote MCP, has the current menu names.1
Add the connector
On a Pro or Max plan, open Settings → Connectors and add a custom connector. Name it Wordsmith and paste the MCP server URL. Leave the advanced OAuth fields empty: Wordsmith registers Claude on its own.On a Team or Enterprise plan, an owner adds the connector once for the organisation, in the organisation’s connector settings. Members then find Wordsmith in their connector list, marked Custom.
2
Connect your account
Click Connect next to Wordsmith. Sign in with your Wordsmith account, check the consent screen, and click Authorize.
Claude Code
Add Wordsmith from a terminal:/mcp in Claude Code, select wordsmith and choose Authenticate. Your browser opens the Wordsmith sign-in page. Claude Code runs on your computer, so the consent screen names it An app on your computer and marks it as unverified. That is expected for apps that sign in through your own machine. Claude Code’s MCP guide covers scopes such as adding a server for one project only.
Claude Code can upload files from your computer to Wordsmith, so you can ask it to review or file a local document.
The Claude directory
Wordsmith is not yet listed in the Claude connector directory. Once it is, you can add it from Settings → Connectors → Browse connectors without pasting a URL, and this page will link to the listing.
Cursor
Open Cursor Settings → MCP and add a server, or add Wordsmith to yourmcp.json (~/.cursor/mcp.json for every project, or .cursor/mcp.json in one project):
Other MCP apps
Any app can connect if it supports remote MCP servers over Streamable HTTP and signs in with OAuth. Add Wordsmith’s MCP server URL, and the app finds the sign-in page on its own.- Apps on your computer that sign in through a local address, such as VS Code or the MCP Inspector, work without setup. The consent screen names them An app on your computer.
- Web apps must be approved by Wordsmith before they can connect. If an app shows a registration error, ask support@wordsmith.ai to add it.
The consent screen
When you connect an app, Wordsmith shows a consent screen. It names the app, shows which Wordsmith account you are signed in with, and lists what the app is asking to do. It also shows the address Wordsmith will send you back to. Approving grants everything on the list. To give an app less, configure the app to ask for fewer scopes. ChatGPT and Claude ask for the standard set below, which leaves out organisation administration. What each scope means
The screen shows one line per area. A line that lets the app change something also lets it read that area.
An app gets
directory:admin only when it asks for it by name. ChatGPT Enterprise also asks for openid and email, to keep apps to your company’s email domain.
files:write does not include files:read: an app that can upload files cannot read your other files without files:read.
No scope adds to your own rights. With directory:admin, for example, the app can change only what you could change yourself as an admin.
Disconnect an app
To see and disconnect the apps you have connected:- In Wordsmith, open Settings.
- Under Configurations, open Connected apps, next to Connectors.
- Click Disconnect next to the app, and confirm.
